Large cardboard letters and numbers are one of those event pieces that almost everyone recognises straight away.

They’re simple, bold, and incredibly versatile. You’ll see them used to spell brand names, event titles, campaign slogans, or just a single word that becomes the visual centre of a space.

At The Cardboard Mill we design and build custom cardboard letters and numbers for exhibitions, brand activations, stage sets, retail displays, conferences and photo moments. They’re lightweight, surprisingly sturdy, and easy to transport compared to traditional materials.

Most clients choose large freestanding letters that sit directly on the floor or on a plinth. The scale makes them visible across a room and gives people something to gather around, photograph, or interact with.

The popular size is around 1.5 metres tall, though we build them in many different scales depending on the venue and the purpose of the installation.

How Cardboard Letters and Numbers Work

Individual letter units

Each letter or number is usually built as its own structure.

That means you can arrange them however you like across a stage, wall, exhibition stand or entry space. Some projects spell a full brand name, others use just a few characters to create a focal point.

Because they are separate units they’re also easier to transport, reposition and reuse.

Structural design

The letters are built from layered cardboard panels that create a rigid internal structure. This gives them strength while keeping the weight manageable.

For most freestanding letters we design them around 300mm deep, which gives enough stability for large formats without becoming bulky.

When required, we add internal weighting so the letters stay steady in busy public environments.

Plinths and bases

Sometimes clients want extra height without dramatically increasing the size of the letter.

In those cases we place the letters onto a plinth or base. This lifts the message higher, gives it more presence in a room and visually grounds the installation.

Plinths also make it easier to integrate lighting or graphics.

Fonts and readability

Most cardboard letters are designed using sans serif or slab fonts.

These fonts have clean shapes that translate well into structural builds. Serif fonts are possible, but the small details can become complex and fragile at large scale.

When letters include floating elements such as the dot on an i or j, we typically support them with a subtle internal element. Often this uses black cardboard to visually disappear, or in rare cases a reusable acrylic box if extra support is needed.

Customisation and Branding

Colour finishes

Cardboard letters can be produced in a range of solid colour finishes depending on the visual style of the event.

Common options include:

  • natural kraft cardboard

  • black cardboard

  • custom coloured finishes matched to brand colours

Kraft cardboard works well for sustainability-focused events and installations where the material itself is part of the visual story. Solid colours are often used when the letters need to align closely with brand guidelines or stand out clearly in a busy space.

Size flexibility

Letter height can vary significantly depending on the space.

Typical ranges include:

Letter Height Typical Use
600–900mm tabletop displays, retail counters
1–1.5m exhibitions, conferences, activations
1.5m - 2.5m large stage sets or public installations

The 1.5m height range tends to be the most popular. It’s large enough to have presence in a room while still being practical to transport and assemble.

Smaller letters can sometimes be more complex to build because the internal structure becomes tighter.

Layout options

Because each character is a separate piece, there are lots of ways to arrange them.

Examples include:

  • straight line word displays
  • stage backdrops
  • staggered layouts across a floor
  • stacked letters on plinths
  • integrated signage walls

Many clients combine letters with other cardboard structures such as arches, walls or display furniture.

Sustainability

Cardboard letters are a strong option for organisations trying to reduce the environmental impact of their events.

The material itself is recyclable fibre-based board, sourced through responsible supply chains and processed locally wherever possible. Because cardboard is lightweight compared to materials like timber or MDF, it also reduces the energy involved in transport and installation.

Many clients reuse letters across multiple events. Campaign words, brand names or annual conference titles often appear again the following year or move between different venues.

After their usable life, the material can usually be recycled through standard cardboard recycling streams.

Businesses are increasingly expected to consider their environmental and social impact. Companies that meet strong standards for transparency and responsibility are helping push the broader shift toward a more regenerative economy, where materials and resources are used more thoughtfully.

Cardboard builds are one practical way to move events in that direction without sacrificing creativity or visual impact.

Ideal Applications

Cardboard letters and numbers appear in all sorts of projects.

Some of the most common uses include:

Brand activations

Large brand names or campaign words create strong visual anchors in activation spaces. They also work well as photo moments for social media.

Conferences and stage sets

Event titles or key themes placed on stage help reinforce the identity of the event and look great in presentation photos.

Trade shows and exhibitions

Letters can form stand signage, product category labels or simple directional elements.

Retail displays and pop ups

Retail environments often use large typography to communicate promotions or seasonal campaigns.

Photo backdrops

Big words and numbers instantly create a photo moment. Guests naturally gather around them.

Theatre and performance sets

Cardboard letters are frequently used as scenic elements that can be moved or reconfigured during performances.

FAQs

How strong are cardboard letters?

They are surprisingly sturdy. The internal structure distributes weight across multiple panels, which makes them stable for public environments. For larger builds we can add internal weighting to keep them secure.

Can the letters be reused?

Yes, many clients reuse them for multiple events. Because each character is a separate unit they can be packed and stored individually.

Can they be shipped interstate?

Absolutely. One advantage of cardboard is its low weight. Letters can be shipped flat-packed or as assembled units depending on the design and logistics.

Can we customise the font?

Yes. Most builds use sans serif or slab fonts because they translate well structurally. Custom fonts are possible, though we sometimes simplify details to keep the letters strong and clean.

Can the letters be printed with graphics?

Yes. We regularly produce letters with full CMYK printing, logos, patterns or event graphics.

How long does it take to produce them?

Production time depends on the scale and level of customisation. Many projects allow a few weeks for design, printing and fabrication, though smaller builds can sometimes be produced faster.

Can letters be made larger than 1.5 metres?

Yes. We regularly build letters between 2 and 3 metres tall or larger for stage sets and large venues. For very large builds we may create modular sections that assemble on site.
